Read down that list and the ranking of price against weight is inverted twice. The terry is the lightest fabric on the page and the second most expensive. The two 300 GSM fabrics weigh the same as each other and yet at the deepest tier one is Rs 330 and the other is Rs 455. If GSM were the price driver, neither of those things could happen.
What actually moves the number
Fibre content. Cotton Fleece at 300 GSM and Polycotton Fleece at 300 GSM are the cleanest comparison available on this page, because the weight is held constant and only the fibre changes. The whole of the difference between Rs 455 and Rs 330 sits in the yarn and in what that yarn does to the rest of the process — how it dyes, how much it shrinks, how it behaves through raising. Cotton is the dearer input and it is also the less forgiving one.
Knit structure. Fleece and terry are not the same construction. A terry loop is left standing; a fleece loop is cut and brushed. Those are different machine settings, different finishing passes and different reject rates, and the standing-loop fabric on this page is priced above both brushed ones despite being sixty grams lighter.
Dye lot and colour depth. The fourteen-colour fleece programme spreads its set-up across fourteen colourways. The Soft Pink terry is a single colourway. A pastel shade is also the least tolerant of batch-to- batch variation, because any drift is visible against a white reference in a way that navy or black drift is not. One colour, one shade band, one run — that is the most expensive way to buy any knitted fabric, and it is why the lightest item on the page is not the cheapest.
Run length. All three fabrics get cheaper as the order gets larger, and they do it at almost exactly the same rate. From the 100–999 band down to the 10,000-plus band, the Polycotton Fleece moves from Rs 347 to Rs 330, the Terry from Rs 462 to Rs 439 and the Cotton Fleece from Rs 479 to Rs 455. In percentage terms those three ladders are within a tenth of a point of each other, which tells you the ladder is a volume ladder rather than a fabric-specific one.
How to compare properly
Compare within a fabric, not across the page. If you are choosing between colourways, hold the fabric and the GSM constant and the price is constant too — all fourteen Polycotton Fleece colourways sit on the same ladder, and all nine Cotton Fleece colourways sit on the same ladder. If you are choosing between fabrics, ask for the two things this page does not state: the knit gauge, and whether the stated GSM was taken before or after raising. Both are covered in the next answer, and both change what 300 GSM actually means in your hand.

EN 12127 was published on 22 October 1997 and its stated scope is that it “describes methods for the determination of the mass per unit area using small samples in the standard atmosphere for testing and/or oven-dry. It is applicable to woven and knitted fabrics. It may also be applicable to fabrics produced by other techniques.” The phrase to notice is and/or. The standard does not pick one condition for you. It describes both and leaves the choice to whoever wrote the specification.
Why the condition matters
A textile fabric holds moisture from the air. Weigh it after it has come to equilibrium in a controlled testing atmosphere and you weigh the fabric plus that moisture. Dry it in an oven first and you weigh the fabric alone. The oven-dry number is therefore the lower of the two, and the gap is larger for cotton-rich fabric than for polyester-rich fabric because the two fibres do not hold the same amount of water.
We do not publish a figure for the size of that gap, and you should be wary of any supplier who quotes one to you as a general rule. The difference depends on the fibre blend, the finish and the atmosphere the test was run in. The right move is not to estimate it — it is to remove the ambiguity by naming the condition on the order.
The second question: which stage of finishing
Both fleece fabrics on this page are brushed. Raising a knitted fabric lifts fibre out of the loop structure to make the soft inner face, and that process changes the fabric — its thickness, its hand, its surface and its measured mass per unit area. A GSM taken on greige fabric off the knitting machine, a GSM taken after dyeing and a GSM taken on finished raised fabric ready to cut are three different numbers for the same cloth.
We do not publish a strength-loss figure for raising, because it is not a single number. It varies with the base fabric, the gauge, the number of passes and the machine. What we can tell you is which figure to ask for.
What to write on the purchase order
Four lines are enough to make a GSM figure contractual rather than descriptive:
Every one of the twenty-four sweatshirts listed on this page states its GSM, which is more than many category pages manage — but a stated GSM without a method, a condition and a stage is a marketing number rather than a specification. The four lines above turn it into something a laboratory can either confirm or fail.
None of this is testing or certification advice for your own compliance obligations. If your tender or your buyer's technical file requires a particular condition or a particular accredited laboratory, take that requirement from the tender document and give it to us, and we will have the fabric tested to it.
ISO 12945-2 is in its second edition, dated October 2020. The three failure modes in its title are worth separating, because on a brushed sweatshirt they do not arrive together and buyers routinely complain about one while having specified against another.
Why a fleece sweatshirt is the hard case
Both 300 GSM fabrics on this page are fleece, which means the soft inner face was made by deliberately lifting fibre out of the loop. That is the same physical event as the first stage of fuzzing — the difference is only that one was done on purpose in a finishing plant and the other happens on a buyer's back. A raised fabric therefore starts life with a surface that is already partly disturbed, which is exactly why the assessment for fleece needs to be about matting and fuzzing at least as much as about pill balls.
The place matting shows up first on a sweatshirt is not the body panel. It is the inside of the forearms where a desk edge rubs, the seat where a chair back presses, and on institutional garments the shoulder where a bag strap sits. If you are ordering for a population that carries bags — students, delivery staff, field teams — ask for the assessment to include a specimen abraded to a higher rub count than the body specification, because the shoulder will get there long before the chest does.
What a usable clause looks like
What we will and will not tell you
We will have fabric tested to a clause you give us, and we will put the report in the order file. We will not publish a grade for a fabric on this page as though it were a house figure, because a pilling grade is a property of a specific batch tested under specific conditions, not a property of the words “300 GSM polycotton fleece”. Any supplier quoting you a pilling grade for a fabric family rather than for a tested lot is describing an expectation, not a result.
This is a specification note, not testing or compliance advice. Where your tender names a different method, a different rub count or a particular accredited laboratory, send us that clause and we will work to it rather than substituting our own.
ISO 6330:2021 is titled Textiles — Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing and its scope states that it “specifies domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing. The procedures are applicable to textile fabrics, garments or other textile articles which are subjected to appropriate combinations of domestic washing and drying procedures. This document also specifies the reference detergents and ballasts for the procedures.”
Read the title again, because it contains the catch in your question. The word is domestic. ISO 6330 is a domestic-laundering standard, and the procedures in it are built around the three domestic machine types — front-loading, top-loading with an agitator, and top-loading with a pulsator. According to the ANSI webstore listing for the 2021 edition, the standard sets out sixteen washing procedures for the front- loading type, twelve for the top-loading agitator type, seven for the top-loading pulsator type and six drying methods. We attribute those counts to that published listing rather than to the text of the standard itself, which we have not reproduced.
The gap between the test and your laundry
An institutional or contract laundry is not a domestic machine. The load, the mechanical action, the chemistry and above all the temperature and drying regime are different, and they are usually harsher. So a garment that passes a domestic-procedure shrinkage clause has not been proven against your actual laundry — it has been proven against a repeatable reference that everybody in the supply chain can run and argue about.
That is not a reason to skip the clause. A repeatable reference test is what makes a dispute resolvable. It is a reason to do two things:
The measurement half
ISO 5077:2007, Textiles — Determination of dimensional change in washing and drying, is in its second edition, dated February 2007. Its scope “specifies a method for the determination of the dimensional change of fabrics, garments or other textile articles when subjected to an appropriate combination of specified washing and drying procedures.” It is the measuring half of the pair — marked datum points, measured before and after, change expressed as a percentage of the original.
On a sweatshirt, insist that the measured dimensions include the ones that make the garment unwearable rather than merely smaller: body length, chest, sleeve length from centre back, and cuff and neck opening widths. A garment can pass a chest-and-length clause and still be rejected because the cuffs closed up.
Cycles and tolerance
State the number of cycles. One cycle catches relaxation shrinkage and nothing else. Institutional buyers should specify three or five, because progressive change across cycles is what generates the complaint in month four. Then agree the tolerance band in writing with us for the specific fabric before cutting — we do not publish a house shrinkage figure for the fabrics on this page, because a tolerance that is honest for one lot of raised cotton fleece is not automatically honest for the next.
This is a specification note and not compliance or testing advice. Where a tender names its own procedure, cycle count or tolerance, give us the tender clause and we will quote against it as written.
ISO 16322-2 is in its second edition, dated April 2021. It measures the thing buyers describe as “the sleeves went crooked” or “the side seam has walked round to the front”, and the reason it is worth knowing the name is that spirality gets misdiagnosed as bad stitching in almost every inspection report we see. If you reject a lot for crooked seams and the mill can show the fabric had residual torque, the argument goes nowhere. If you specified a maximum spirality up front, it does not need to be an argument at all.
What causes it
A knitted loop is formed by a twisted yarn, and the yarn wants to untwist. In a single-jersey or fleece structure there is nothing balancing that tendency, so the whole fabric carries a residual rotational stress. Dry finishing can hold it flat and hide it. The first proper wash releases it, the fabric rotates, and the seams — which were sewn straight into fabric that was temporarily lying straight — rotate with it.
This is why the complaint almost never arrives at goods-in inspection. It arrives after the first or second laundering, which for an institutional order means it arrives after you have distributed the garments and after you have paid. Specifying against it is the only practical protection.
Which of the three procedures to name
The standard's own note is that results from different procedures may not be comparable, so the procedure must be named rather than left to the laboratory.
What a clause should contain
What reduces it in practice
Spirality is designed out at the yarn and knitting stage rather than corrected at the garment stage. Plated or balanced-twist constructions, a heavier interlock-family structure instead of single jersey, and compaction and setting in finishing all reduce it. All of those are fabric-development decisions, which means they belong in the conversation before the fabric is booked and not in the conversation after the first wash trial. If low spirality matters more to you than hitting the lowest tier on this page, say so at enquiry stage and we will route the enquiry to a fabric built for it.

ISO 13938-1 is in its second edition, dated November 2019, and its scope “describes a hydraulic method for the determination of bursting strength and bursting distension of textile fabrics. In this document, a hydraulic pressure is applied using a constant rate of pumping device.” The method applies to knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated fabrics, and specimens can be tested conditioned or wet.
Why the wrong test produces a meaningless number
In a woven fabric, load travels along a yarn that runs from one edge of the strip to the other. Grip both ends, pull, and the number you get is the force that broke those yarns. It is a real property and it is repeatable.
In a knitted fabric, every yarn is looped through its neighbours. Pull a strip and the loops rotate and straighten long before any yarn breaks. What you measure is largely the fabric's willingness to deform, and it varies wildly with how the specimen was cut and gripped. Two competent laboratories can return very different tensile numbers for the same knitted fleece, and neither of them is wrong — the test simply is not measuring a stable property of that fabric.
A bursting test loads the fabric over an area instead of along a line. A specimen is clamped over an expanding diaphragm and pressure is raised until it fails. That is much closer to how a sweatshirt actually fails in service: an elbow pushing out, a shoulder loaded by a bag, a knee or a chair back pressing into the fabric. Two results come out — bursting strength, the pressure at failure, and bursting distension, how far the fabric stretched before it went. The second one matters as much as the first on a garment that has to keep its shape.
Hydraulic or pneumatic
There is a Part 2 of the same standard covering a pneumatic method. The Part 1 listing notes that hydraulic and pneumatic burst testers give comparable results up to 800 kPa, with the hydraulic apparatus preferred for specialty textiles that need higher bursting pressures. For a fleece or terry sweatshirt you are nowhere near that ceiling, so either apparatus is defensible — but the clause should still name one, because naming the apparatus is what stops a laboratory choosing for you and a supplier choosing differently.
How to fix a tender you have already received
If the tender document is not yours to change, do not simply strike the tensile clause out. Answer it and add to it:
If the tender is yours to write, the cleanest specification for a knitted garment names bursting strength and bursting distension to ISO 13938-1:2019, a seam-strength clause, and the pilling and dimensional- change clauses covered elsewhere on this page. That set describes a sweatshirt. A tensile clause on its own does not.
We will test to whatever the tender says, including a clause we think is the wrong one, and we will say so in the covering note rather than silently substituting. None of this is legal or procurement advice on the interpretation of your tender documents — take that from your own technical adviser.
The standard is in its fourth edition, dated March 2010, and its own framing is useful here. It notes that “colour loss and staining resulting from desorption and/or abrasive action in one single (S) test closely approximates to one commercial or domestic laundering”, and that multiple (M) tests may approximate up to five launderings at temperatures not exceeding 70 °C, being more severe than S tests because of the increased mechanical action.
Single or multiple — pick deliberately
An S test stands in for one wash. An M test stands in for up to five and is harder on the specimen. For an institutional order that is the whole decision: if the garment will be laundered weekly for a year, an S result tells you almost nothing about month three. Specify an M test.
Two cautions the standard itself raises. The M approximation is bounded at temperatures not exceeding 70 °C, so it does not stand in for a hotter contract-laundry programme. And the methods are written around specified reference detergents and bleach systems and do not account for optical brighteners present in commercial products — so a result obtained under the standard does not predict what a particular commercial detergent will do to a particular shade. Neither of these makes the test less useful; both mean the result should be read as a comparable reference rather than as a guarantee about your laundry.
Read the staining column, not just the shade column
A colour-fastness result has two parts. One is how much the specimen's own colour changed. The other is how much colour transferred onto the adjacent fabric in the test. Buyers routinely specify the first and then get a claim caused by the second, because the complaint is not “my navy sweatshirt faded”, it is “my navy sweatshirt turned the shirts grey”. Specify a minimum grade for staining of adjacents explicitly, and name the adjacent fibre types you care about — cotton and polyester at minimum, since those are what the rest of the wash load will be.
Which colours to test
There are twenty-three colourways across the three fabrics on this page, and testing every one of them is neither affordable nor necessary. Test the extremes of the risk, which for a dye-transfer question means the deepest and most saturated shades in each fabric. Across the fourteen Polycotton Fleece colours and the nine Cotton Fleece colours, that means Black, Navy or Navy Blue, Maroon, Red and Bottle Green. Test those and you have bracketed the page — a Beige or a Sky Blue is not what is going to stain a white shirt.
One naming point to carry into the order: the deep blue is listed as Navy in the Polycotton Fleece range and as Navy Blue in the Cotton Fleece range, and the greys are listed as Grey and Grey Melange. Use the exact listing name of the specific SKU on the purchase order and on the test request, or you will get a test report against a colour you did not order.
Handling, alongside specification
A specification is not a substitute for a first-wash instruction to the laundry. Washing the first cycle of dark garments separately, at the lowest temperature the care label allows, is ordinary practice and it costs nothing. Put it in the handover note to whoever runs the laundry, along with the care label content covered in the next answer.
This is a specification note rather than testing or compliance advice. Where a tender names a different part of the ISO 105 series or a particular minimum grade, send us the clause as written and we will test to it.
The standard's scope, in full, is that it “establishes a set of graphic symbols designed for marking textile articles, providing information on the most severe treatments that will not cause irreversible damage during the textile care process”. The gap on this page is worth stating plainly. English prose care instructions are readable by a buyer in Bengaluru and by a buyer in London. They are not readable by an end consumer in a market whose language is not English, and they are not readable by an industrial laundry operator sorting a mixed load at speed. Symbols are.
What the 2023 revision changed
Three things are worth knowing if you are working from an older specification. The revision adds new symbols for washing by hand at ambient temperature, adds new symbols for ironing without steam, and changes several symbols to align with the GINETEX symbol set. If your buyer's technical file or your own artwork library predates December 2023, the symbols in it may not match the current edition, and a mismatch between the artwork and the standard cited on the label is the kind of thing that gets flagged at a buyer's compliance audit rather than at our end.
What we do not assert
We do not tell you that any particular destination market legally requires ISO 3758 symbols, or that prose alone is legally insufficient anywhere. Care-labelling law is national, it differs between markets, and in several markets the requirement is about the presence and content of care information rather than about which symbol system encodes it. That question belongs to your customs broker or your own counsel in the destination market. Nothing in this answer is legal advice and it should not be used in place of a market- specific opinion.
What we will say commercially is that symbols to the current edition of ISO 3758 are what buyers in most export markets expect to see, they cost nothing extra to add at the point the label artwork is made, and adding them later means re-labelling finished stock.
What belongs on a sweatshirt label besides the symbols
The practical route
Send us the label artwork your buyer requires and we will produce to it. If you do not have artwork, send us the destination market, the fibre declaration you intend to make and the care regime you want stated, and we will build a label layout for your approval before anything is printed. Approve the artwork in writing before the cut — a label change after sewing is a re-label of the whole lot, and on a 23-colour order that is a genuinely expensive correction.
We are not going to tell you which line your consignment should be declared under. That is a determination for your customs broker or classification adviser on the facts of the actual garment and the actual transaction, and nothing in this answer is customs, tariff or legal advice. What we can do is set out what the schedule says and point at the single physical feature that most often decides it, so that you can specify the garment knowing that the specification has a classification consequence.
What the schedule contains
Heading 6110 is headed “JERSEYS, PULLOVERS, CARDIGANS, WAISTCOATS AND SIMILAR ARTICLES, KNITTED OR CROCHETED”, and it subdivides by fibre. The lines include 61101110 jerseys, 61101120 sweaters and cardigans, 61101190 other, 61101200 of Kashmir (cashmere) goats, 61101900 other, 61102000 of cotton, 61103010 of synthetic fibres, 61103020 of artificial fibres and 61109000 of other textile materials. Note that the heading text does not define “similar articles”, and no chapter note in this chapter defines it either.
Heading 6105 is headed “MEN'S OR BOYS' SHIRTS, KNITTED OR CROCHETED”, with 61051010 shirts hand crocheted, 61051020 “Knit shirts (other than T-shirts) and sweat shirts, other than hand crocheted”, and 61051090 other. Heading 6109, for completeness, covers “T-SHIRTS, SINGLETS AND OTHER VESTS, KNITTED OR CROCHETED” and is a different question again.
The chapter note that does the work
Chapter Note 4 to Chapter 61 reads: “Headings 6105 and 6106 do not cover garments with pockets below the waist, with a ribbed waistband or other means of tightening at the bottom of the garment, or garments having an average of less than 10 stitches per linear centimetre in each direction counted on an area measuring at least 10 cm x 10 cm. Heading 6105 does not cover sleeveless garments.”
That note is why the hem matters. A garment with a ribbed waistband, or with any other means of tightening at the bottom, is excluded from 6105 by the note itself — regardless of the fact that 61051020 mentions sweat shirts by name. A garment finished with a plain open hem is not excluded by that limb of the note. The same note also sets a stitch-density threshold and excludes sleeveless garments from 6105.
The gap on this page — and what to ask for
The listings on this page state “crew neck with ribbed finish” and “full sleeves with ribbed cuffs”. They do not state the hem finish. That is precisely the fact the chapter note turns on, and it is not published anywhere on the page. Before you raise a purchase order for an import or export consignment, ask us in writing for four things and put the answers in the order file:
Those four facts are what a broker needs. The unit of quantity in the schedule is “u” — pieces — for both 61051020 and 61102000, so your packing list and your declaration should agree on a piece count.
What we will not publish
We do not publish duty rates or tax rates for any tariff line, and we do not confirm a heading for a buyer's consignment. The tariff schedule we have quoted from carries no duty values. Rates change, they differ by transaction and by notification, and a rate quoted in a supplier FAQ is a liability rather than a service. Take the rate and the final classification from your broker.
We would rather set this out honestly than paper over it, because a buyer who discovers a minimum-order disagreement after issuing a purchase order has lost time that a two-line email would have saved.
The three routes, and the number that belongs to each
Ready stock, from one piece. Goods already made, already in the fulfilment centre, in a colour and size that is on the shelf. Nothing has to be cut and nothing has to be printed, so there is no economic minimum beyond the cost of picking and packing a single unit. This is the route behind the “from 1 piece” statement at the top of the page. It suits a sample, a size-fit trial, a replacement against a short delivery, or a genuinely small top-up.
Custom manufacture or branding, from 100 pieces per style per colour. Once a garment has to be cut to your specification, or once your logo has to go onto it, a set-up exists. Screen preparation or embroidery digitising, a colour approval, a strike-off, a first-piece inspection — all of that is incurred once per style and per colour whether you order one hundred pieces or one thousand. One hundred is where that set-up stops dominating the piece price. Note the unit carefully: it is per style per colour. An order for 300 pieces split across six colours is six runs of fifty, not one run of three hundred, and it will not price as one run of three hundred.
The 1,000 in the product specification field. The Polycotton Fleece and Polycotton Terry product pages carry 1,000 in their minimum-order field. The Cotton Fleece product page carries 100. Both of those product ranges also publish a 100–999 price band, which cannot be reconciled with a 1,000-piece minimum on the same page — if the minimum were genuinely 1,000, the 100–999 band could never be used. We have flagged that to our own team as a page defect. For your purposes, treat the specification field as unreliable and take the minimum from the order acknowledgement.
What to ask for, in one email
The lead times attached to the two routes differ substantially. Ready stock dispatches from the Bengaluru fulfilment centre and is typically delivered within 7 to 10 days pan-India. Custom manufacture typically runs 15 to 30 days. If you are working to a fixed event date or a term start, that difference decides your route before price does.
A note on splitting an order across routes
You can use both. A common pattern for an institutional buyer is to take a handful of ready-stock pieces immediately for size fitting and sign-off, then place the main branded order once the fit is approved. That gets the fitting risk out of the way without holding up the production slot. Say at enquiry stage that you intend to do this, so that the fitting pieces are drawn from the same fabric as the main run rather than from whatever is nearest the door.

The gap between the headline and the entry band
The premium you pay at the real entry quantity, against the headline figure, is 5.15 per cent on the Polycotton Fleece, 5.24 per cent on the Terry and 5.27 per cent on the Cotton Fleece. Those three numbers being almost identical is a good sign — it means the ladder is a genuine volume ladder applied consistently across three fabrics, rather than three separately invented sets of numbers.
It also means the honest way to describe this category is as a range with two ends. The headline range across the page is Rs 330 to Rs 455. The range an ordinary first-time buyer will actually be invoiced is Rs 347 to Rs 479. Both are true; only the second one is useful for a budget.
Why you may have seen a fourth number
The category tile that links to this page from the factori.com home page shows Rs 455 as the starting price. That figure is the floor of the Cotton Fleece range, not the floor of the category. The lowest price on this page is Rs 330, so the home-page tile overstates the entry point of this category by roughly 38 per cent. We have raised that internally as a correction to be made. If you arrived here from that tile, the page you are on now is the accurate one.
The other things that move an invoice
What to ask for in writing
Ask for a quotation that states the SKU, the colour, the size break, the quantity, the band applied, the per- piece price, the branding line separately, the extended-size surcharge if any, the lead time and the validity date of the quotation. A quotation with those ten fields on it cannot drift between enquiry and invoice. Nothing in this answer is tax or pricing advice for your own accounts — it is a description of the published ladders and what sits outside them.
This is worth being blunt about, because it is the single most common way an institutional sweatshirt order fails. The order is placed against a size curve that the page cannot fill, the shortfall is discovered at distribution, and the buyer ends up with a visible group of people wearing a different garment from everybody else — or wearing nothing at all.
What the page actually offers
So the size range is not uniform even within the page. There is exactly one XS, exactly one 3XL, and they are on different fabrics in different colours. If you need both ends of the curve in a single colour, no listing on this page provides it.
The route for extended sizes
Extended sizes are made rather than picked. That puts them on the custom-manufacture route: from 100 pieces per style per colour, typically 15 to 30 days. Three things then need settling before anything is cut.
How to build a size curve that will actually arrive
Measure, do not guess. For an institutional or corporate order, run a size-collection exercise against the actual population rather than applying a curve from a previous order or an industry default. We do not publish a standard size distribution and you should not accept one from any supplier — the distribution of a factory workforce, a school cohort and a corporate office are not the same, and the tail above 2XL is exactly where the differences are largest and where the cost of getting it wrong is highest.
Then split the order deliberately: the S-to-2XL body of the curve can come from stock on the ready-stock route if you are not branding, while the extended sizes go onto the custom route in the same colour and the same fabric. Say at enquiry stage that the two parts must match, so that the extended sizes are cut from the same fabric lot rather than from a later one. A shade difference between the extended sizes and the rest of the order is the second most common failure after the shortfall itself.
Finally, order the tail generously. A 3XL that is slightly loose is worn. A 2XL on someone who needs a 3XL is not, and it becomes a re-order at a small quantity and a poor price.
It is better to say that clearly than to let a buyer assume the page is the range. If what you need is a crew- neck sweatshirt in a specific colour, this page is genuinely strong — twenty-three colourways is unusual depth and every single listing states its GSM. If what you need is a different silhouette, the page will look like a dead end when it is not one.

How to get one of those made
Contract manufacture runs through the partner network — 606 partner factories across India, per the figure published at the top of this page — on the custom route: from 100 pieces per style per colour, typically 15 to 30 days. We do not name partner factories or their locations, because those relationships are under confidentiality agreements, but we do take responsibility for the order as a single supplier and a single invoice.

What to ask for before committing
Ask for a costing and a pre-production sample, and treat the sample as the specification. Approve it in writing, keep a sealed counter-sample, and state on the purchase order that the bulk will be inspected against it. For a new silhouette that is the whole quality-control system in one sentence, and it costs one garment and a few days.
One more thing worth doing at the same time: if you are developing a silhouette, develop the size range you actually need at the same time rather than adding extended sizes later. The grading conversation and the pattern conversation are the same conversation, and splitting them means paying for two development cycles.
The reason this deserves a purchase-order clause rather than a phone call is arithmetic. Twenty-three colourways against five or six sizes is well over a hundred possible colour-and-size combinations. If nobody has said how those combinations are to be grouped into bags and cartons, they will be grouped in whatever way is fastest at the packing bench, and you will discover the consequence when you try to distribute the order to eleven sites.
The two ways to pack a mixed order
Solid packing. One colour and one size per bag or carton, marked. Easiest to count, easiest to verify at goods-in, easiest to store, and the right choice when your order will be broken down centrally before distribution.
Ratio or assortment packing. A fixed mix of sizes in each bag or carton — a stated ratio, say two small, three medium, three large, two extra-large. The right choice when cartons go straight out to individual sites unopened, because each site receives a workable spread without anybody having to re-sort. It is harder to verify and it requires the ratio to be stated exactly, per colour, on the order.
Pick one deliberately. The expensive outcome is the order that was packed solid when the sites needed ratios, or packed to a ratio when the central store needed to count colours.
The clause to write
Counting on arrival, and who bears a short count
Agree the receipt protocol before dispatch, not after a discrepancy. Three points settle almost every dispute we have seen:
Get the exact colour names right on every document. The deep blue is Navy in the Polycotton Fleece range and Navy Blue in the Cotton Fleece range; the greys are Grey and Grey Melange. Those are four distinct listing names, and a purchase order that says “navy” across two fabrics is an invitation to a mis- pick that nobody is clearly at fault for.
None of the above is legal advice on the allocation of risk in your contract — where title and risk pass, and on what terms, is for your own contract and your own adviser. What it is, is the set of facts that a packing dispute turns on, written down before the dispute.
Governments and public bodies
Buying is by tender, and the tender is the specification. What decides the order is documentation: test reports against named standards from a laboratory the tender will accept, a measurement chart, a sealed approved sample, and delivery in lots against a schedule. The failure mode is a tender that names a test written for woven fabric — a tensile clause on a knitted garment being the classic case, covered earlier on this page. Send us the tender document as issued. We will quote to it as written and flag any clause that we think does not fit a knitted garment, rather than substituting a different test quietly.
Institutions — schools, colleges, hostels, hospitals, training centres
The garment will be laundered institutionally, repeatedly, for years, and it must still be recognisable at the end. What decides the order is dimensional change and colour fastness across multiple cycles, not the first-wash result. Two operational points matter as much as the specification: mid-year replacement, because students grow and new students arrive, and shade continuity, because a replacement sweatshirt that is visibly a different navy is worse than no replacement. Ask for the fabric lot to be reserved for your repeat orders, and place the repeat order before you run out rather than after.
Corporates
The sweatshirt is a brand carrier. What decides the order is whether the garment colour matches the brand palette and whether the logo reproduces cleanly on a brushed surface — a raised fleece face is not a smooth substrate, and fine detail and thin type behave differently on it than on a woven shirt. Ask for a strike-off on the actual fabric and the actual colour before the bulk print. Then plan for joiners: a corporate order is never finished, and a small top-up at a poor price six months later is the predictable cost of not agreeing a top-up arrangement at the outset.
Brands and private labels
The garment ships under your name, so the label and the consistency are yours to answer for. What decides the order is the label — fibre declaration, care symbols to the current edition of ISO 3758, size designation for your market, country of origin and the responsible party — and repeat-cut consistency, because your customer will place your third cut next to your first. Approve label artwork in writing before the cut, and keep a sealed counter-sample from every cut.
Retailers
What decides the order is the size curve and the packing. A retail buyer who orders an even split across sizes will be sitting on unsold extra-large in month three and out of medium in week two. Build the curve from your own sell-through data, and specify assortment packing so that cartons can go to shops unopened. Replenishment speed then matters more than the last few rupees of the ladder — ready stock in 7 to 10 days pan-India is a different business proposition from a 15-to-30-day custom run, and the right answer is usually to hold the core colours on the fast route.
Wholesalers and distributors
What decides the order is colour depth and the ladder, which is exactly what this page is strongest at — twenty-three colourways on three fabrics with a consistent volume ladder across all three. Buy at the band your real quantity reaches rather than the headline, remember that the minimum applies per style and per colour so that spreading quantity across colours moves you up each ladder, and fix the case-lot and carton marking on the order so that your own customers receive countable units.
What all six should do the same way
Specify the garment in writing before it is made: fabric and GSM with the measurement condition and finishing stage named, the tests and grades that matter for the use, a measurement chart, the packing and marking, and an approved sealed sample the bulk will be inspected against.
